nVelopes is a simple application to assist those using cash envelopes for their budgeting. Pretty much everything is kept on one screen for easy access. nVelopes does all the work of calculating how much cash to withdraw and many tens and twenties, etc., that go in each envelope. Use this app in conjunction with your budget spreadsheet or whatever system you use.
You decide what percentage of your income you want to set aside for some standard things like clothing, going out to eat, household items, even gas for your car. The idea is to spend cash for as many things as possible instead of using a credit card. This accomplishes two things: one, you’re not spending money to spend money (read: credit card interest) and two, the pain of handing over cash helps you curb your “enthusiasm” for buying.
Each time you make a deposit, use nVelopes to help you fill your cash envelopes.
You can can have as many or as few envelopes as you want. An “envelope” is just a way to earmark a percentage and (OR) a fixed amount for a certain expense category. nVelopes makes it easy to set up envelopes for as many categories as you want. You can add, delete, and edit your envelopes at will; calculations are automatic.
Just type in how much a particular chunk of money went IN to your account and nVelopes tells you how much to take OUT based on your envelope settings. It also tells you exactly how many 20s, 10s, 5s, and 1s to ask for from the bank teller so you can make the right change for each envelope - probably the handiest part!.
BTW, this is not a security risk. It’s not connected to your bank. Nor is it intended as a repository for your financial records. It’s just a handy calculator that you can use when you get paid to help you get the right amounts into your cash envelopes.
